- GPIR office in Grand Portage, MN. is open from May thru October during the operating season. It is located in the Hat Point Marina, next to the Voygeur II dock. Office hours are 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Mon-Fri, 8am-12pm on Saturday, the office is closed Sunday. Office phone is (218)475-0024.
- SCHEDULE ADJUSTMENT FOR 2008: Due to extremely low water levels on Lake Superior, the Wenonah will not be available for Day Trips in 2008. However, we will be offering Day Trips on FRIDAYS ONLY on the Voyageur II, June 13 - September 5, 2008. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED. Please click on Schedules / Rates to the left for more information.
- In the last few years we have all watched our fuel costs rise uncontrolably and dramatically, GPIR was unable to continue to absorb these costs and in July 2006 we had no choice but to implement a fuel surcharge. As our rates are published at the beginning of the calandar year, this is the only fair way we found to recoup these extraordinary operating increases. The surcharge is recalculated only when we receive a fuel load, not on the daily average fuel price, it is a real surcharge, not a profit center. We regret the charge, but our fuel costs are approaching a 300% increase and fluctuate too much to figure into a passenger fare that is published anually. The surcharge is added to the ticket price at time of booking. The surcharge has been between $4-$8 per trip.
Thank you for your understanding.
Travel Safety, First Aid, Water and Other Issues
- Potable water is available at Windigo and Rock Harbor on Isle Royale.
- Weather and lake conditions can deteriorate unexpectedly. Temperatures can drop rapidly, especially near Lake Superior, where water and air temperatures are cool year-round. Please bring appropriate dress for both cool and warm weather, as well as rain and foul-weather gear.
- Bring a good first aid kit when hiking or paddling, as well as a sufficient supply of any needed medications.
- Basic emergency services are available on the island, but contacting rangers for assistance can be difficult. Emergency response and evacuation may take time, requiring you to rely on your own skills and equipment. Most private boaters on Lake Superior have radios and can contact park rangers in the event of an emergency.
- If you pack it in, pack it out! Please do not burn, bury or place trash, food scraps or other garbage in the outhouses. Please carefully package any leftover food or garbage and pack it out of the backcountry with you.
- Please take care to contain all gear inside of packs. Due to safety and damage concerns we will not allow pots/pans, water bottles, shoes, boots etc. to be attached to the outside of packs. After removal from the boat you may arrange items as you wish.
