Grand Portage Isle Royale Transportation Lines offers day trips to the island aboard the Sea Hunter III. We depart at 8:30 am from Hat Point Marina in Grand Portage, MN. *For late September day trips aboard the Voyageur II see "Schedules" below. The boat passes and pauses at several points of interest including the Spirit Little Cedar Tree (or "Witch Tree"), a 400+ year old white cedar on the Lake Superior shoreline; the shallow water wreck of the 182' steamship America; and the imposing Rock of Ages Lighthouse, along the way out and back from Isle Royale allowing time for photos and viewing (weather permitting). We arrive on the island around 10:00 am, and the Park rangers will welcome you to take part in planned activities including guided hikes and programs, or you can plan your own stay. Sea Hunter III passengers have 4 hours on the island, allowing plenty of time for hiking, a picnic lunch, shopping for souvenirs and snacks at the Windigo Store, exploring the exhibits at the visitor center, or just relaxing. Then we reboard for a 2:00 pm departure and get back to the marina around 3:30 pm, leaving plenty of time to visit other places of interest in Grand Portage or get to your next destination.

Please note: Day trips are never scheduled on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Passengers must be at the boat dock and prepared to board 20 minutes prior to departure from Grand Portage and 15 minutes prior to departure from Isle Royale on the way back.

All reservations include a fuel surcharge of $4 to and from Windigo, therefore each day trip will have an $8 per ticket charge added to it when you check out.
All reservations require a full fare remittance at the time of the reservation. A reservation is not confirmed until payment is received. Payment can be made by Visa or MasterCard only.
National Park Entrance Fee
For information about the daily entrance fee and park passes please CLICK HERE. Keep your pass or proof of entrance fee payment on your person during boat transportation as you will need to present it to park personnel upon arrival.
Each passenger is allowed up to 40 lbs of gear. If you will have over 40 lbs of gear you will need to call our office ahead of time to pay an extra charge (see cost on our Rates page) and reserve room on the boat for it.
Our vessels may not be able to accommodate walkers or wheelchairs. Please call us for more information. We are not able to accommodate power scooters on our boats.
Our boats traverse the largest of the Great Lakes during many weather conditions. Wind speed and direction on any given day determines wave size that may affect your comfort on board. In addition, as the boat moves through the water even smaller waves may cause spray on the decks, and our vessels travel rain or shine. For these reasons we suggest passengers bring their rain gear with them in case. Please keep in mind that the lake is typically 30 to 40 degrees cooler than the air temperature on the mainland. Dress accordingly, in layers, and include a jacket and long pants. Our crew is dedicated to your comfort and safety and we ask that you come prepared for Lake Superior's varied weather conditions.

All reservations cancelled at least two full weeks prior to the scheduled trip date are subject to a 15% fee and 85% of fare will be refunded. If a reservation is cancelled within two weeks of your scheduled trip date there is NO REFUND. You MUST call us to cancel a reservation prior to the trip date or no refund will be made. Due to circumstances in life changing without warning it may be prudent to consider purchasing trip insurance from a third party provider.
If WE cancel a trip due to weather or any other conditions you will receive a full refund of all fares, however, you must be present to receive the refund. If you are not present you will be deemed "No Show" and will forfeit your refund.
If you need to change your itinerary on an existing reservation so you get picked up or dropped off at a different point and/or on a different day than you booked you may do so by calling our office. Changes are subject to availability and there will be a $10 charge for this service.
